A smartphone is a product with great environmental impact in both manufacturing and use. You are a product design engineer at a consultancy and have recently been approached by a smartphone manufacturer to critically assess the environmental impacts of a product and make guidelines for their design/manufacture practices in terms of environmental issues. Consider one of the smartphones available on the market and make an environmental life cycle assessment to include the following: Task 1: Goal and scope definition for the project and an inventory of the life cycle stages for the smartphone and the forms and levels of energy consumption involved at each stage; Task 2: A proposal of suitable criteria (also giving reasons) for the selection of materials for a smartphone relative to environmental impacts; Task 3: Some guidelines on the design and manufacture practices of the company based on your analysis; Task 4: Social measures that could be beneficial in reducing environmental impact in the manufacturing and use of the smartphone.
