Compare and contrast three different primary sources that we read this semester: The Narrative of Cabeza de Vaca, Journey into Mohawk Country (or the Journal of H.M. van den Bogaert), and Olaudah Equiano’s Interesting Narrative (for the purposes of this question, you can ignore the fact that the graphic novel version of van den Bogaert was illustrated by another person, and just treat it as van den Bogaert’s primary source). Each of these texts involves a man giving a first person account of things that happened to him. But these sources were written at different times, for different audiences, and to serve different purposes. -First, take each one by one. Who wrote the source, who do you think they were writing for, and what do you think they were they trying to accomplish? There is not necessarily just one right answer to the latter two questions – some people were writing to multiple audiences, to accomplish more than one thing. -Second, compare and contrast the three sources. How are they similar? How are they different? What are some factors to keep in mind as we judge the reliability of these sources?
