Border Gateway Protocol (BGP)
After completing the required reading on the Border Gateway Protocol (BGP), in addition to Section 5 of RFC
4271, and looking at the supplemental Cisco document, “BGP Best Path Selection Algorithm,” discuss why it is
necessary for BGP to offer so many different approaches and attributes to manipulating the flow of traffic and
why categories are needed for their organization.
As the authors of our course text point out, “A lot of network engineers do not understand BGP best-path
selection, which can often result in suboptimal routing” (Edgeworth et al., 2020, p. 314).
Review several of your classmates’ posts and respond to at least two of your peers by the end of Day 7 of the
week.
In your response to your classmates’ posts:
Indicate whether you agree with your classmates’ assessments on the need for BGP to offer myriad
approaches to manipulating the flow of L3 traffic.
Try to expand on your rationale by asking your classmates questions and provide additional resources and
evidence to support your claims and to expand their thoughts on their point of view.
