Answer
Sports and Games as Popular Culture
Some of the activities undertaken during an individual’s free time form part of popular culture. Pastime and leisure activities, which fall under the category of recreation, have tremendous effects on the society (Bennett, 2013). One the recreational activities are the games and sports which individuals engage in to enjoy themselves and meet their friends. The importance of sports such as hockey, basketball, and football is that people exchange valuable information and share critical moments. Sports help people interact with each other and work as teams. When kids become part of sports clubs at young ages, they learn the basics of teamwork and the aspect of working together in the achievement of a particular goal. Eventually, according to Bennett (2013), sporting activities create a sense of community and culture. Individuals can associate themselves with popular culture by the nature of their connection to sports as well as their involvement in community affairs. Although not all people are fans of particular sports, the effect of the sporting activities on the society is tremendous (Giulianotti, 2012). Involvement in sports and games has become popular due to the increasing fan base of various sporting events. This learning log presents an experience of the author’s participation in sporting activities.
LEARNING LOG
- What did I do?
I was involved in various sporting activities such as football and hockey during my leisure time. From the multiple number of games that we played, I learned a lot from my teammates as we shared lots of information on trending issues in the community and globally. For instance, we discussed the challenges that the world is facing about terror.
- How do I think/feel about this?
I feel happy to have been part of the football and hockey teams as it helped me understand some of the social aspects. The sharing of ideas on how we can solve some of the global problems as well as how we can make our community safe made me feel excellent about the role of recreational activities as part of popular culture.
- What did I think about but not say (or what did I want to say but did not)
I wanted to challenge some of my teammates who had given hope in life because they had faced various challenges. However, I was afraid that I would get a negative response considering that some of the challenges were massive.
- How well (or badly) did it go?
The use of sports and other recreational activities to share ideas on matters affecting our community went very well as most of the community members were willing to get involved. Most of the teammates in the football and hockey teams proposed various ways in which we could ensure the security of the community and success in our lives. However, some of the team members were cynical of the impact of teamwork.
- What did I learn?
I learned that sports provide a critical opportunity through which people can discuss community issues beyond the places of work. Additionally, I learned that games could be used to examine matters to do with security, poverty, and success.
- What will I do differently next time?
Presented with a similar chance, I would ensure that I raise all pertinent issues and request teammates to provide concrete solutions to those problems.
- How will I do it differently next time?
Net time, I would be more proactive and would lead my teammates in holding the local administration accountable to matters affecting the community. Additionally, I would request my teammates to be vigilant and report any suspicious persons to ensure the security of the community.
- What have I achieved?
One of the achievements through participation in the sporting activities is getting to articulate some of the issues that affect the society. Additionally, I helped some of the teammates who had lost hope in life as well as others who had negative thoughts about their prospects of success.
- What have I learned about myself?
The lessons I have achieved is that I am very social considering that I got along with most of the teammates. Additionally, I got to know that I am very persuasive and influential based on how most of the teammates agreed with my points and acted on the issues that I raised.
- How have I put any theory into practice?
I practiced the theory of “culture as a system of participation” by calling upon my teammates to rise and make their community a safe and secure place.
- How does what I have been doing lead to me becoming better at a skill
My participation in football and hockey boosted my mobilization skills as well as the socialization skills. Specifically, I am now better in mobilizing people for a common cause and in taking a little amount of time to interact with people and know their interests.
- How can I use this to plan for the future?
I will use the sports and games platform to address various contemporary issues in my community. Indeed, the sporting activities would be the platform that individuals would use to air their views on different aspects and provide solutions based on their points of view and experiences.
- (How) can I use this to plan new learning experiences?
I can deploy games and sports to mobilize people to come together and find solutions to various issues of mutual interests. Being part of sporting activities will help me understand various trending events and hence boost my knowledge and analysis on contemporary issues.
