Use multiple sources of information to assess ELLs’ language and literacy skills and communicative
competence.
Prepare ELLs to use self- and peer-assessment techniques, when appropriate, and to develop necessary testtaking skills and strategies.
Assess ELLs’ language and literacy development in classroom settings using a variety of authentic
assessments, e.g., portfolios, checklists, and rubrics.
Identify situations in which re-teaching is necessary and appropriate for ELLs, as well as factors such as
cultural and linguistic bias that affect assessment.
Identify appropriate measurement concepts (e.g., reliability, validity), test characteristics, and uses of normreferenced and criterion-referenced assessments in evaluating ELLs.
Evaluate formal and informal assessments to measure oral language, literacy, and academic achievement.
Identify and use a variety of assessment procedures and determine appropriate modifications of classroom
tests, including test items and tasks, for ELLs of diverse backgrounds and at varying English proficiency levels.
